Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
