Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach competed at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed supporting the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. The road from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his destiny.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and great man-management. His roles at clubs included elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock all the time, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies feature mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead with developments but to surpass them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We have to play an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that our playing approach must reflect the best aspects about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the adaptability, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, attacking high up. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information now. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, since his group included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he sought out the most challenging environments he could find to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

Barry graduated as the best in his year, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those convinced and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.

His replacement with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. The Football Association consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
