The former Harvard president, who formerly led the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The recently released emails showed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted the economist's choice to resign.

This development follows after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to approve a measure that would compel the US justice department to release its records on Epstein.

The legislation will afterward proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has stated he expects to sign the legislation, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.

The communications indicated that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to influential world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were released with the public, the former official expressed he took "total ownership for my misguided decision to maintain corresponding with the financier".

He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the people most important to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as leader of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He headed the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.

Summers became part of the board of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
