NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, did not confirm this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.

"My choice was based on the security of my family and the need to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
