Secrecy on the Internet is an Illusion’: Australian Youth Indicted Regarding Alleged Active Shooter False Report in United States

A teenager from NSW has been indicted for purportedly making multiple false reports to 911 operators – an act called “swatting calls” – falsely claiming active shooter situations were happening at major retail and schools in the America.

Cross-Border Investigation Culminates in Charges

Australian authorities charged the young male on 18 December. Officials state he is a member of a purported distributed digital criminal group operating from behind anonymous accounts in order to prompt an “immediate and large-scale SWAT team deployment”.

“Frequently male youths between the ages of 11 to 25, are involved in activities including swatting calls, doxxing and hacking to earn credibility, notoriety and recognition in their digital communities.”

As part of the case, authorities seized several digital devices and a banned gun discovered in the juvenile’s possession. This operation was conducted under a specialized task force formed in October 2025.

Officials Deliver a Stark Warning

A senior AFP official, speaking generally, advised that people believing they can carry out offenses from behind a computer and anonymous accounts should be warned.

The AFP confirmed it began its investigation upon receiving information from the FBI.

An FBI assistant director, from the FBI's international wing, said that the “risky and resource-draining act” of hoax 911 calls threatened public safety and consumed vital emergency resources.

“This incident shows that anonymity online is an myth,” he commented in a joint statement with authorities.

He further stated, “We are dedicated to collaborating with the AFP, our international partners, and industry experts to locate and hold accountable individuals that abuse the internet to cause harm to communities.”

Judicial Process

The accused faces a dozen charges of misuse of telecom services and an additional charge of illegal possession of a prohibited firearm. The individual potentially faces up to a decade and a half in a correctional facility.

“The police's duty (is|remains) to stopping the damage and suffering participants of such networks are imposing on the community, under the mistaken belief they are hidden,” the official said.

The youth was due to face a New South Wales juvenile court on Tuesday.
