The Spectacle and Psychology Behind every Ashes First Ball

Burns Dismissed on the First Ball in the Ashes

That initial delivery in a series is much more than simply one pitch.

It represents a gut-wrenching three or four seconds filled with pure drama, when every bit of pre-match discussion finally ends.

"To establish that atmosphere throughout the whole series would be really remarkable," commented England paceman Gus Atkinson when asked about the possibility recently.

"I understand there have been several historic opening-delivery occasions during Ashes matches. The possibility to add to tradition would be amazing."

Like the bowler observes, the opening ball has created some of the truly memorable Ashes occasions - events that appeared to define that storyline or at least proved convenient to reflect upon in hindsight...

Cummins Driving Through Cover Field

Skipper Ben Stokes closed innings on 393-8 just before stumps during day one in 2023's Ashes series

Zak Crawley had spent his build-up to the 2023 Ashes series planning driving that opening delivery to four runs - about hoping to "create an impact."

Australian skipper Pat Cummins ran in at Edgbaston when Crawley hammered a shot past cover field to deafening roars from English fans.

"I've always remained an enormous admirer of the opening delivery in Ashes cricket," Crawley revealed.

"I've been watching them from childhood so I realized a couple weeks before if should we won coin toss there would be a strong chance to receiving that ball."

"I chatted with Harry Brook regarding this when we were golfing on course - that it would be amazing should I hit the first one away and make an impact."

The English didn't won that series - while Australia thrillingly took that first match during last day - but it was a hint at how Ben Stokes' side planned to play aggressively during the series.

The Opener & England Dismissed Early

England were bowled out for 147 on the first day in the 2021-22 series

That occasion at Edgbaston proved among rare opening deliveries that went in favor of the English, however.

Significantly more often they've served as telling signs regarding the Australian control that was following.

During 2021's tour, Mitchell Starc bowled English batsman Rory Burns via a half-volley in the Gabba to become the first pitcher to take a dismissal with the opening delivery in an Ashes contest after Aussie bowler Ernest McCormick during the 1930s.

The English build-up had been lacking and at that instant during Aussie jubilation England took a blow psychologically.

"My confidence simply plummeted to the floor," said bowler Stuart Broad, who was observing from the dressing room.

"You have worked for these matches and immediately, first ball, he is out."

The series were lost in eleven more days while the Australians won the contest 4-0.

Slater's Statement Shot

Slater scored 176 in the first innings of the 1994-95 series, having cut the first delivery in the series for four

It is also unsurprising a captain who reveled in "psychological warfare" believed events were set by a similar event 27 before.

Steve Waugh with the Australians aimed for their fourth Ashes series victory consecutively when batsman Michael Slater started the 1994-95 series with decisively hitting English bowler Phil DeFreitas to boundary through the offside.

"It felt as if 'alright team here we go again we have got them now'," recalled Waugh, who'd feature all five matches during a 3-1 domestic win.

"In our minds it felt like we're on top already so let's just continue attacking. We know how to beat these guys."

Significant.

The Bowler's Horror Delivery

The Australians scored 602-9 declared in the first innings following Steve Harmison's errant delivery, with skipper Ricky Ponting scoring 196

But suppose that ball proves only that - one in 10,000 or so to start the contest?

The wide Steve Harmison bowled to start the 2006-07 series - where he bowled the ball into the grasp of skipper Andrew Flintoff in the slips, almost missing the pitch completely - proved the most remembered Ashes opener in history.

"I froze," Harmison told journalists soon afterwards.

"I allowed the enormity of the occasion get to me. Everything felt so alien for me. My entire being felt tense."

"I could not stop my grip to stop sweating. That initial delivery flew from my grasp, the second also slipped, then, after that, I possessed no control, zero."

The English claimed 2005's Ashes 15 months earlier but were comprehensively defeated five-nil. Some contend that Ashes were lost at that very moment.

"We weren't skilled enough to defeat
