UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
